Llandudno is a delightful Victorian seaside town on the northern coast of Wales, and receives abundant sunshine every year. Its potential as a tourist destination was noticed in the mid-nineteenth century, and it was soon developed as a beach resort. Numerous hotels and bed and breakfast boutiques were constructed, especially along the promenade near the North Shore beach. Some of these hotels in Llandudno still stand today, lending a historic Edwardian look to the town.
This year, we celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of the Queen in June. To mark this landmark occasion, a chain of beacons will be lit around the United Kingdom on the 4th of June. One of these beacons is scheduled to be lit in Llandudno, on the summit of the towering Great Orme headland, to the west of town. The owner of the Great Orme summit complex has decided to prepare the beacon at his own expense, a decision which has been gladly welcomed by the townsfolk.
Some of the other events that will be held during the Queen's Diamond Jubilee celebrations include a thanksgiving service at Holy Trinity Church, and the opening of a sensory garden at Queen's Park in the nearby town of Craig-y-Don. In addition, the finance committee of the town council has set aside £2,000, to help fund street parties around town. According to Cllr Philip Evans, it is appropriate for the town council to contribute towards the cost of street parties, as the jubilee resonates across generations.
The town is expecting a huge inflow of tourists during the jubilee celebrations. As most of the town residents are occupied in tourism-related professions, such as running bed and breakfast boutiques and hotels in Llandudno, they expect to make big profits during this period. In fact, many owners of hotels in Llandudno are considering re-furbishing their premises for the jubilee celebrations, and decorating hotel interiors with a 'royal' theme; featuring portraits of the royal family, Victorian artefacts and sculptures.
