Nestled on the slopes of a limestone headland in Llandudno in North Wales, is the Great Orme Tramway. The Llandudno Tramway
The Great Orme Tramway is also known as the 'Llandudno Tramway'. In the mid-nineteenth century when Llandudno was being developed for tourism, it was sensed that the summit of the Great Orme would make a good tourist attraction. As the steep slopes of the limestone headland made climbing difficult, it was decided to build a tram system to help people reach the top of the Great Orme. This decision was welcomed by owners of bed and breakfast boutiques and hotels in Llandudno, who felt that the construction of a cable tramway would boost tourism.
In early 1901, the first bricks for the construction of this tramway were laid. After about fifteen months, the construction was complete and the tramway was deemed safe for public use. The Llandudno Tramway was inaugurated on 31st July 1902, as a local band proudly played the national anthem. The tramway was a great boon to the tourist industry in Llandudno, enabling tourists from hotels in Llandudno to glimpse picturesque views of the Irish Sea, even if they were disabled or physically infirm.
Today, the Great Orme Tramway is the only funicular tramway in Great Britain that is hauled by a cable. Most tramways don't have cables. The Llandudno tramway, on the other hand, has cars which are permanently fixed to a cable. These cars are moved by starting and stopping the cable. Trams run every 20 minutes.
