It has been announced that a total sum of £2.4 million has been granted for the development of historical sites in Wales, to encourage heritage tourism. While a large part of these funds will be used to improve historic places around Gwynedd's slate quarries, a certain portion of these funds will also be used to open up more sections of the Bronze Age copper mines situated in Llandudno. These mines are located on the breathtaking Great Orme limestone headland, on the east side of town.
Llandudno is one of the foremost seaside holiday destinations in Wales, with numerous tourists checking into bed and breakfast boutiques annually. In fact, tourism is the mainstay of the town's economy, with most of the populace engaged in running travel agencies, bed and breakfast boutiques, and hotels in Llandudno. The Bronze Age copper mines are one of the main attractions in town, with almost all tourists from hotels in Llandudno visiting it at least once, during their stay here.
The funding for the further development of these historical sites comes from the £19 million heritage tourism project of the Welsh government, which is supported with £8.5 million of European funding. According to Huw Lewis, the Heritage Minister, these funds will help projects build facilities that will 'tell Wales' story', and give tourists from bed and breakfast boutiques a better understanding of the culture and history of Wales, over the ages. The diverse historic environment of Wales is one of the main reasons why many people come to hotels in Llandudno and other Welsh towns.
It is believed that the funds from this grant will be used to improve access to the Great Orme Mines, and improve safety. These mines were discovered in 1987, while efforts were on to landscape the Great Orme headland. Other projects that will be helped through this grant include the old Quarry Hospital at Gwynedd, a fishing history project in Conwy, a pilgrim's trail from Llansanan to Bardsey Island, Hafod Copperworks at Swansea, and Castell Henllys at Pembrokeshire National Park.
